Navratri
Navratri is a significant Hindu festival which is observed for 9 nights and 10 days. During Navratri, nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped. The word Navaratri means “nine nights” in Sanskrit, nava meaning “nine” and ratri meaning “nights”.
As per Mahakala Samhita, there are four Navratri in Hindu calendar:
Sharad Navratri
Chaitra Navratri
Magha Gupta Navratri
Ashadha Gupta Navratri
Navratri Origin | Significance
During Sharadiya Navratri, Goddess Durga killed mighty demon Mahishasura. Different religious texts mention separate form of Goddess Durga who killed Mahishasura. As per Rambha Kalpa, Goddess Durga in the form of 18 handed Ugrachandi killed Mahishasura. However, as per Neelalohita Kalpa, 16 handed Bhadrakali killed Mahishasura and as per Shwetavaraha Kalpa 10 handed Katyayani killed Mahishasura.
However, most religious texts agree that it was demon Mahishasura who was killed by one of the ferocious forms of Goddess Durga. Hence, the victory of Goddess Durga over evil is celebrated during Navratri.
Navratri Deity(s)
The main Goddess of Navratri is Goddess Durga who is also known as Goddess Bhavani. Bhavani translates to “giver of life,” meaning the power of nature or the source of creative energy. All these forms of Durga are attributed to Goddess Parvati.
Nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped during Navratri. Each day of Navratri is associated with a different form of the Goddess, known as the Navadurga. Here’s a detailed explanation of each day and the corresponding deity:
Day 1: Shailaputri
Deity: Shailaputri is the first form of Goddess Durga. The name “Shailaputri” means “Daughter of the Mountain,” as she is the daughter of King Himavan (the Mountain King) and is also known as Parvati.
Symbolism: She represents purity and strength. Riding a bull (Nandi) and holding a trident and a lotus in her hands,
Day 2: Brahmacharini
Deity: Brahmacharini (Unmarried One) represents Goddess Parvati as Yogini, her unmarried self. Brahmacharini is worshipped for emancipation or moksha and endowment of peace and prosperity.
Symbolism: Depicted as walking bare feet and holding a japamala (rosary) and a kamandala (pot) in her hands, she symbolizes bliss and calm.
Day 3: Chandraghanta
Deity: Chandraghanta is the third form – the name derived from the fact that after marrying Shiva, Parvati adorned her forehead with the ardhachandra (lit. half-moon).
Symbolism: She is the embodiment of beauty and is also symbolic of bravery. Riding a tiger, she has ten hands, each holding different weapons, signifying her readiness to battle evil forces.
Day 4: Kushmanda
Deity: Kushmanda, the fourth form, is believed to be the creative power of the universe. The name translates to “the cosmic egg” (Ku means little, Ushma means warmth or energy, and Anda means egg).
Symbolism: She is associated with the endowment of vegetation on earth. Riding a lion, she has eight hands holding weapons, a rosary, and a lotus.
Day 5: Skandamata
Deity: Skandamata is the mother of Lord Skanda (Kartikeya), the commander of the divine army.
Symbolism: She is depicted riding a lion, holding her son Skanda on her lap, and having four arms. Skandamata symbolizes the nurturing aspect of motherhood and protection.
Day 6: Katyayani
Deity: Born to sage Katyayna, she is an incarnation of Durga which killed the demon Mahishasura. Known as the warrior goddess, she is considered one of the most violent forms of Devi.
Symbolism: She is depicted with four hands and riding a lion. Katyayani represents courage and is often prayed to for the removal of obstacles.
Day 7: Kalaratri
Deity: Kalaratri, also known as Kali, is the fiercest form of Durga. The name means “the dark night.” It is believed that Parvati removed her pale skin to kill the asuras Shumbha and Nishumbha.
Symbolism: She symbolizes the destruction of ignorance and the end of darkness. Kalaratri is depicted as a dark-skinned goddess with four hands, a fearless posture and riding a donkey.
Day 8: Mahagauri
Deity: Mahagauri represents purity, serenity, and tranquility. She is known as the goddess who is calm and peaceful. It is believed when Kalaratri took a bath in the Ganga river, she gained a warmer complexion.
Symbolism: Mahagauri is depicted with four hands, riding a white bull, and is usually dressed in white. She is worshipped for her beauty, intelligence, and virtue.
Day 9: Siddhidatri
Deity: Siddhidatri is the ninth form of Durga. She is believed to possess and bestows all types of Siddhis (supernatural powers). She mainly bestows nine types of siddhis- ‘Anima (the ability to reduce one’s body to the size of an atom).’ , ‘Mahima(the ability to expand one’s body to an infinitely large size)’, ‘Garima (the ability to become heavy or dense.)’, ‘Laghima (the ability to become weightless or lighter than air.)’, ‘Prapti (the ability to realize whatever one desires’), ‘Prakamya (the ability to access any place in the world’) , ‘Isitva (the ability to control all material elements or natural forces.)’ and ‘vasitva ( the ability to force influence upon anyone.)’ Siddhidatri is Parvati, the wife of Lord Shiva. Siddhidhatri is also seen as the Ardhanarishvara form of Shiva and Shakti. It is believed that one side of Lord Shiva’s body is that of Goddess Siddhidatri. Therefore, he is also known by the name of Ardhanarishwara.
Symbolism: She is depicted sitting on a lotus. Siddhidatri has four hands, holding a discus, a conch shell, a lotus, and a mace.
Day 10: Vijayadashami (Dussehra)
Celebration: The tenth day, known as Vijayadashami, marks the triumph of Rama over the 10-headed demon king Ravana, who abducted Rama’s wife, Sita. It is celebrated with the burning of effigies of Ravana, symbolizing the victory of good and the defeat of evil. The festival’s name is derived from the Sanskrit words dasha (“ten”) and hara (“defeat”).
Significance: This day also marks the end of the Navratri and the tenth day of the Durga Puja festival. It is considered auspicious for new beginnings and ventures and marks the beginning of preparation for Diwali, which occurs 20 days after Dussehra
Each form of the goddess represents a different aspect of life, from purity and devotion to strength and wisdom, making Navratri a spiritually enriching festival for devotees.
Dussehra: Vijaya Dashmi
Killing of Mahishasura
One of the fiercest demons, Mahishasura undertook severe penance to obtain a boon that he cannot be killed by a male, underestimating at his own cost the power of the female form, and started creating havoc everywhere. To stop him, Shakti took a very beautiful form of Durga and told him that she would marry him if he defeats her in a battle. It is believed that they battled for 9 days, and on the 10th day, Maa Durga killed Mahishasura. Therefore the 10th day is called Vijayadashmi, day of the victory. One of the most famous idols that you see in temples depicts this scene where Mahishasura, in the form of a half bull, is being slayed by Mother Durga.
Spiritual Symbolism: Kill the Mahishasura within. May Maa Durga guide and help you.
Victory of Lord Rama over Ravana
The most widely recognized story associated with Vijaya Dashami is from the epic Ramayana. It marks the victory of Lord Rama, over the demon king Ravana, who had abducted Rama’s wife, Sita. Rama’s victory is symbolic of the triumph of dharma (righteousness) over adharma (evil).
The day is commemorated by burning large effigies of Ravana, along with those of his son Meghnath and brother Kumbhkaran, signifying the destruction of evil forces.
The Legend of Arjuna
Another story linked to Vijaya Dashami is from the Mahabharata. It is believed that on this day, Arjuna, one of the Pandavas, retrieved his weapons hidden in a Shami tree after a year of exile and used them to defeat the Kauravas. This victory is celebrated as the triumph of righteousness and skill over arrogance and might.
In some regions, people worship weapons and tools on this day, symbolizing the importance of preparedness and protection.
Symbolism of Vijaya Dashami
Good Over Evil:
The burning of Ravana’s effigy on Vijaya Dashami symbolizes the destruction of evil and the restoration of justice and righteousness. It serves as a reminder that no matter how powerful evil might seem, it will eventually be vanquished by truth and goodness.
End of Darkness and Ignorance:
Vijaya Dashami represents the end of ignorance, darkness, and negativity in one’s life. The victory of Lord Rama and Goddess Durga signifies the inner spiritual battle that individuals face, and the ultimate triumph of wisdom and enlightenment over ignorance and ego.
Perfect Matrimony:
Ramayana shows us that how important is your life partner. When Rama decides to go to 14 years exile in the forest, his wife joins him in this difficult mission leaving all the comforts of the palace.
When Ravana kidnaps Sita, Rama wages a war with the mighty Ravana with an army of Monkeys and wins back his wife.
Nowadays, mistakenly boys and girls, men and women give more importance to money, career and comforts than love/spouse. But Ramayana shows the path of Perfect Matrimony.
Empowerment of the Divine Feminine:
The worship of Goddess Durga highlights the significance of feminine power (Shakti) in maintaining cosmic balance. It emphasizes the role of women as protectors, creators, and nurturers, embodying strength and compassion.
Rituals and Celebrations:
Ram Lila: In many parts of North India, the story of Rama’s victory over Ravana is enacted in plays known as Ram Lila, culminating in the burning of effigies on Dussehra.
Durga Visarjan: In Bengal, the immersion of Durga idols in rivers or seas is a significant part of the celebration, symbolizing the goddess’s return to her celestial abode.
Shami Puja: In some regions, people worship the Shami tree, symbolizing the Arjuna’s victory over Kauravas.
